SUMMARY:The April Book Club - A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers
DESCRIPTION:Our book club pick for April is A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers!! This solar/hope-punk novella was recommended to us a while back\, and once we read it we realized it was perfect for our students (especially if you loved Enchant!) \n“Chambers’ writing is always tender and healing\, but this book has something else braided into it ― something more… This is a book that\, for one night\, made me stop asking ‘what am I even for?’ I’m prescribing a preorder to anyone who has ever felt lost. Stunning\, kind\, necessary.” ― Sarah Gailey \n“I read this book in one sitting when I was having a really wretched day\, and it helped. It felt like a warm cup of tea made by someone who loves me. It’s a soft hug of a book\, and it says ‘It’s okay if you’re not okay right now.’ It made me cry the good sort of tears―the sort when someone is unexpectedly kind to you at the moment you need it most.” ― Alexandra Rowland \n“A joyful experience and\, as with all of Chambers’s books\, I was left with a warm\, fuzzy feeling inside.” ― New Scientist \nOur meeting will be on Monday\, April 29th at 7PM ET. If you want to join us\, make sure you’re at a $7+ tier on Patreon for the month! \nCan’t make it live? The replay will be available right after the meeting takes place!

SUMMARY:The March Book Club - The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry
DESCRIPTION:Our book club pick for March is The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry!! We don’t want to give too much away about this one\, so we’ll just let these blurbs win you over -> \n“In this gorgeous ode to books and storytellers\, Patti Callahan Henry shows that literature lives inside us\, and can unite us despite the odds. Through war\, young love\, a sister’s remorse\, and a mysterious land called Whisperwood\, I was torn between savoring each word and tearing through the pages to learn what happened next. Pure magic!” — Janet Skeslien Charles \n“A spellbinding tale of hope and perseverance\, The Secret Book of Flora Lea is as enchanting and whimsical as the Whisperwood fairytale hidden within its pages. It reminds us that a happily-ever-after isn’t out of reach—so long as we heed the tiny voice within\, whispering that the real magic of the story may be closer than we think.” — Sarah Penner \nCONTENT WARNING: This novel includes discussion of child disappearance and death\, war\, and profound loss. \nAlso – If you like audiobooks\, you might want to listen to this one! Brittany purchased it that way\, and it’s REALLY well done! \nOur meeting will be on Thursday\, March 28th at 7PM ET. If you want to join us\, make sure you’re at a $7+ tier on Patreon for the month! \nCan’t make it live? The replay will be available right after the meeting takes place!

SUMMARY:The February Book Club - The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen
DESCRIPTION:Our Book Club pick for the romantic month of February is The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen! \n“Romantic\, wildly creative\, and utterly charming\, The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy is a fantasy unlike any I’ve read before.” – Lana Harper \n“If Lewis Carroll and Nora Ephron teamed up to write a magical Western\, this would be the result. An unabashedly offbeat adventure full of dead gods and mostly dead zombies\, family drama\, swoon-worthy letters\, and a Very Good Dog\, The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy oozes romantic fun lie a corpse oozes dubious fluids.” – Freya Marske \nOur meeting will be on Monday\, February 26th at 7PM ET. SUMMARY:The January Book Club - A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been spending all this time debating whether Naomi Novik’s A Deadly Education counted as Dark Academia or not that we decided we should open it up to the book club to decide its fate! It’s our January pick and\, Dark Academia or not\, we love it and can’t wait to talk to you about it! \nHere’s the official description: \n“A Deadly Education is set at Scholomance\, a school for the magically gifted where failure means certain death (for real) — until one girl\, El\, begins to unlock its many secrets. \nThere are no teachers\, no holidays\, and no friendships\, save strategic ones. Survival is more important than any letter grade\, for the school won’t allow its students to leave until they graduate… or die! The rules are deceptively simple: Don’t walk the halls alone. And beware of the monsters who lurk everywhere. \nEl is uniquely prepared for the school’s dangers. She may be without allies\, but she possesses a dark power strong enough to level mountains and wipe out millions. It would be easy enough for El to defeat the monsters that prowl the school. The problem? Her powerful dark magic might also kill all the other students.” \nAnd here’s what people are saying about it: \n“Novik deliciously undoes expectations about magic schools\, destined heroes\, and family legacies. A gorgeous book about monsters and monstrousness\, chockablock with action\, cleverness\, and wit.” – Holly Black \n“Hilarious and wild! Take any fictional magic school\, make it as over-the-top dangerous as possible\, and populate it with a bunch of snarky teenagers; the result is pure batshit fun.” – N. K. Jemisin \n“The dark school of magic I’ve been waiting for.” – Katherine Arden \nIf you would like to join us\, make sure you’re on the $7+ tier on our Patreon for the month of January! Our meeting will be January 25th at 7PM ET!

SUMMARY:The December Book Club - Saint Death's Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney
DESCRIPTION:So you know all those requests we’ve had to read C.S.E. Cooney’s Saint Death’s Daughter? Well we (and Claire!) heard you\, and we’re seriously thrilled that Claire has offered to come to book club LIVE on December 18th at 7PM ET to talk about her gorgeous book! (Inside and out. LOOK at that cover!) \nSaint’s Death Daughter just won the 2023 World Fantasy Award (holy smokes!!)\, and it’s a truly beautiful\, wildly creative\, joyful book. It’s also a glorious CHONK\, so we recommend getting started on it early. \nHave questions for Claire? Email them us at theprofs@carterhaughschool.com ! \nHere’s a description to whet your appetite: \n“Nothing complicates life like Death. \nLanie Stones\, the daughter of the Royal Assassin and Chief Executioner of Liriat\, has never led a normal life. Born with a gift for necromancy and a literal allergy to violence\, she was raised in isolation in the family’s crumbling mansion by her oldest friend\, the ancient revenant Goody Graves. \nWhen her parents are murdered\, it falls on Lanie and her cheerfully psychotic sister Nita to settle their extensive debts or lose their ancestral home—and Goody with it. Appeals to Liriat’s ruler to protect them fall on indifferent ears… until she\, too\, is murdered\, throwing the nation’s future into doubt.\nHunted by Liriat’s enemies\, hounded by her family’s creditors and terrorised by the ghost of her great-grandfather\, Lanie will need more than luck to get through the next few months—but when the goddess of Death is on your side\, anything is possible.” \nAnd here’s what people are saying about it: \n“C. S. E. Cooney is one of the most moving\, daring\, and plainly beautiful voices to come out of recent fantasy. She’s a powerhouse.” — Catherynne M. Valente\, NYT-bestselling author of the Fairyland novels \n“A delicious stew of science fiction\, horror\, and fantasy\, marked by unforgettable characters who plumb the depths of pathos and triumph.” — Publishers Weekly\, starred review \n“Memorable prose propelled by extraordinary ideas… Twisted genius!” — Locus Magazine \nAnd so continues our run of books about (gentle) necromancy! Thank you again SO MUCH to Claire for joining us – if YOU would like to join us\, make sure you’re on the $7+ tier on our Patreon for the month of December!

SUMMARY:The November Book Club - Mortal Follies by Alexis Hall
DESCRIPTION:Our Book Club pick for the month of November is the hilarious Mortal Follies by Alexis Hall!! It’s got Shakespeare\, fairies\, regency drama\, queer romance\, and SO much more. \n“Fresh and delightful . . . All the interpersonal drama of Jane Austen meets all the complex treachery of Greek mythology.” – Publishers Weekly (starred review) \n“[Mortal Follies] is a lovely\, pitch-perfect romance\, with an alternate Regency setting that is well developed and has tremendous charm. . . . Part historical\, part fantasy\, all top-notch queer romance.” – Kirkus Reviews (starred review) \nPlease note that this selection comes with a trigger warning for a depiction of animal sacrifice (animal death is normally our 100% veto\, but it’s a very minor part here – we just wanted to be sure to give you a warning!) \nOur meeting will be on Thursday\, November 16th at 7PM ET. SUMMARY:The October Book Club - Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (Edited by Carmen Maria Machado)
DESCRIPTION:Our book club pick for October is J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s gorgeous and formative vampire novella\, Carmilla! Specifically\, we’re going to read Carmen Maria Machado’s edited version of the text\, which weaves the story together with imaginary contemporary academia and underscores its queer themes. \n“I can’t think of a better guide through this ethereal\, infuriating book than Carmen Machado—whose Borgesian imagination unearths for us the possibilities buried in its pages.”\n—Jordan Hall\, co-creator & writer of Carmilla: The Series \n“Simultaneously a delicious vampire tale and a meaningful exercise in remembering silenced voices and questioning the authority of tradition.” – Kirkus Reviews \n“[Machado’s] notes and introduction transform the novel from Victorian Gothic into postmodern Gothic” – Katharine Coldiron for Vol. 1 Brooklyn \nOur meeting will be on Monday\, October 9th at 7PM ET – a bit of a quick turnaround this time\, but this is definitely a book you can read in one sitting! If you want to join us\, make sure you’re at a $7+ tier on Patreon for the month of October! \nCan’t make it live? The replay will be available right after the meeting takes place!

SUMMARY:The September Book Club - Tales from the Hinterland by Melissa Albert
DESCRIPTION:Our book club pick for September is Melissa Albert’s collection of unsettling fairy tales\, Tales from the Hinterland! \n“Lush and deliciously sinister fairytales to be consumed as greedily as Turkish delight or any fairy fruit. I loved these.” ― Kelly Link \n“The writing is as spare and precise as poetry\, connected to the darker\, edgier elements of fairy-tale conventions. Albert’s rich and tightly focused collection forms the core of the mythology created in her novels\, and her fans will be thrilled at this further glimpse into that world.” ― Booklist\, starred review \nOur meeting will be on Thursday\, September 21st at 7PM ET. SUMMARY:The August Book Club - Glass Town by Isabel Greenberg
DESCRIPTION:Our Book Club pick for the month of August is Glass Town: The Imaginary World of the Brontës by Isabel Greenberg – our first graphic novel!! We adored this thoughtful story about stories (and of course it doesn’t hurt that it’s about our beloved Brontë siblings!) \n“Greenberg pulls Glass Town and its characters directly from the Brontës’ juvenilia\, giving readers a look into the early creativity of an iconic literary family with a playful visual style that captures the Brontës’ enthusiasm as they discover what fiction can do.” — AV Club \n“This lyrical\, endlessly inventive book will appeal equally to lovers of history\, literature\, and metatextual fantasy.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) \nOur meeting will be on Tuesday\, August 29th at 7PM ET. SUMMARY:The July Book Club - Burning Girls by Veronica Schanoes
DESCRIPTION:Hi all! We are thrilled to announce that we have the honor of another guest for our book club – the incredible writer and scholar Veronica Schanoes!! Our book club pick for July is her gorgeous short story collection\, Burning Girls\, and she will be with us live to talk about it on the 24th 31st! \nPlease note that we have had to reschedule this event!! It will now take place on July 31st at 7PM ET – we apologize for any inconvenience!! \n“This is one of my most anticipated releases of 2021\, period. Schanoes compiles a collection of stories about women in the margins. Fierce stories\, from historical fantasy to fairytales\, that take inspiration from other fantasists\, such as Karen Russell and Kelly Link. Such a collection will no doubt take its place alongside some of my favorite collections of all time\, such as Link’s Get In Trouble and Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber.” ― Book Riot‘s 10 Speculative Short Story Collections to Enjoy in 2021 \n“Veronica Schanoes is one of the most powerful voices in speculative fiction and has been for a very long time. Her work effortlessly blends the modern with the archetypal. It is constantly surprising\, endlessly rich\, and terribly needed.” – Catherynne M. Valente \n“Brilliant tales of enviable imagination\, gracefully written\, and with a strong feminist center. One of the best collections I’ve come across in recent years.” – Jeffrey Ford \n“Veronica Schanoes’ imagination and artistry are on fire in her collection. . . . She draws on the deep\, untapped potential of traditional tales and classic fantasy to inspire her own unique\, compelling narratives. Subtly crafted\, her stories are startling in their emotional\, psychological\, and social resonance.” – Donald Haase \nOur meeting will be on Monday\, July 31st at 7PM ET – if you want to join us\, make sure you’re at a $7+ tier on Patreon for the month of July! \nCan’t make it live? SUMMARY:The June Book Club - Enter the Body by Joy McCullough
DESCRIPTION:Hi everyone! \nOur book club pick for June is Joy McCullough’s Enter the Body – yep\, we’re giving you just a tiny bit more Shakespeare\, but this time it’s in the form of a book that reads an awfully lot like an experimental fairy-tale retelling (and we are HERE FOR IT.) \n“Body turns Shakespeare on his head while honoring his talent as the girls retells their stories on their own terms…. Truly outstanding.” – Booklist\, starred review \n“At once tender\, poetic and ferocious\, Enter The Body breathes new life into the Bard’s most tragic heroines. More than a tribute to Shakespeare\, this kaleidoscopic\, ambitious novel-in-verse gives Juliet\, Ophelia\, Cordelia\, and Lavinia the chance to tell their own stories full of passion\, justice\, sisterhood\, and love. Simply spectacular.” – Michael L. Printz Award winner Laura Ruby\, author of Bone Gap \nWe’ll be meeting on June 22nd\, 2023 at 7PM ET\, so be sure to join us on Patreon at the $7 book club level or higher to take part. SUMMARY:The March Book Club - KIN S FUR by Margaret Yocom
DESCRIPTION:Hey everyone! We are so excited to announce that our book club pick for March is KIN S FUR by Dr. Margaret Yocom\, our mentor and dear friend… who will be joining us for the meeting and reading the whole book LIVE! \nThis is a book of erasure poetry – using her own translation of the Grimm fairy tale “All Kinds of Fur\,” Dr. Yocom weaves a beautiful story behind the story\, one of resilience and personal power. \n“Open this book and enter a world of danger\, transformation\, and tactical survival—a multi-layered\, multi-voiced telling of ‘Allerleirauh’ / ‘All Kinds Of Fur\,’ a Brothers Grimm tale you most likely have not met\, a ‘Cinderella’ version with incest. In a new translation\, Margaret Yocom first brings us this forgotten tale\, stocked\, as we’d expect\, with kings\, rings\, beasts\, and betrayals. She then\, through erasure\, lures out of its darkness another voice—the voice of ‘All Kinds Of Fur’ herself\, lying hidden within its words. In keeping with traditions of wonder tales\, erasure practice poses riddles and embodies paradoxes—adding by subtracting\, listening by looking\, redrawing the boundaries of author and reader\, teller and told. Enter this forest. Voice what you see. Is it sunlight in shadow\, or a sudden shadow cutting through light?”—Susan Tichy \n“These poems are haunted by what Yocom makes invisible by her erasures; what she makes visible has different bones. The incest in the fairy tale variously translated as ‘All Fur’ or ‘Donkeyskin’ shows through the skin without the ‘s’: kin. I have used these poems in my fairy tale course to introduce students to a tradition whose dark side has been erased\, in other ways\, by numerous editors and publishers—and which KIN S FUR restores. Are we not all\, like these fairy tale beings\, humanimals?” – Katharine Young \nOur meeting will be on Monday\, March 20th at 7PM ET – and Dr. Yocom will be there to read and talk about her book and process! If you want to join us\, make sure you’re at a $7+ tier on Patreon for the month of March! \nCan’t make it live? The replay will be available right after the meeting takes place!

SUMMARY:The February Book Club - Woman\, Eating by Claire Kohda
DESCRIPTION:Hey all! Our book club pick for February is Woman\, Eating by Claire Kohda\, a really unusual take on the vampire legend that we think will give us a LOT to talk about! \n“Absolutely brilliant – tragic\, funny\, eccentric and so perfectly suited to this particularly weird time. Claire Kohda takes the vampire trope and makes it her own in a way that feels fresh and original. Serious issues of race\, disability\, misogyny\, body image\, sexual abuse are handled with subtlety\, insight\, and a lightness of touch. The spell this novel casts is so complete I feel utterly\, and happily\, bitten.” — Ruth Ozeki\, Booker-shortlisted author of A Tale for the Time Being \nOur meeting will be on Monday\, February 27th at 7PM ET – if you want to join us\, make sure you’re at a $7+ tier for the month of February! \nCan’t make it live? SUMMARY:The January Book Club - The 2022 Short Stories Nominated for the Hugo Award
DESCRIPTION:We’re doing something a little different this month! Instead of a single book\, our book club picks for January are the five short stories nominated for the 2022 Hugo Award. \nWe’re a little late getting the information about this book club out\, so we figured a shorter assignment was only fair – plus\, these stories are all AMAZING and thought provoking and strange and wonderful. We can’t wait to talk about each of them with you (and\, of course\, taking a vote on which story you think should have won!) \nThe five short story nominees for 2022 were: \n“Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather” by Sarah Pinsker (Uncanny Magazine\, Mar/Apr 2021) \n“Mr. Death” by Alix E. Harrow (Apex Magazine\, Feb 2021) \n“Proof by Induction” by José Pablo Iriarte (Uncanny Magazine\, May/Jun 2021) \n“The Sin of America” by Catherynne M. Valente (Uncanny Magazine\, Mar/Apr 2021) \n“Tangles” by Seanan McGuire (Magicthegathering.com: Magic Story\, Sep 2021) \n“Unknown Number” by Blue Neustifter (Twitter\, Jul 2021)\n[Note: This story was published on Twitter\, which means that you have to follow the replies in the thread to get the full story!] \nClick each story to read! \nIn case you’re not familiar with them\, the Hugo Awards are annual awards for the best science fiction/fantasy works and achievements of the previous year. They are given at the World Science Fiction Convention and chosen by the World Science Fiction Society members. They’re kinda a big deal! \nOur meeting will take place on January 26th at 7PM ET. SUMMARY:The December Book Club - Christmas Days by Jeanette Winterson
DESCRIPTION:Our December book club pick is CHRISTMAS DAYS: 12 STORIES AND 12 FEASTS FOR 12 DAYS by Jeanette Winterson! \nThis book is full of stories that are funny and thought-provoking\, traditional and innovative\, “childlike and spooky” – exactly the kinds of tales you want to read during the winter holiday time! Though her theme is Christmas\, we think this collection will appeal to those of any and/or no religion in their lives as well – there are mysteries\, ghost stories\, and romances here! \n“Spooky\, clever\, funny\, and poignant\, Winterson’s supernatural tales refresh our appreciation of what it truly means to give\, to love\, and to share joy.” – Booklist \n“Winterson has gathered 12 Yule-themed stories . . . She is especially good with the supernatural\, using eerie and magical elements in ways that hark back to Poe and Dickens . . . Spooky\, inventive\, funny . . . [the book] has a 19th-century charm much needed in the grim 21st.” – Kirkus Reviews (starred review) \nPlus there are a bunch of delicious-sounding recipes as well! \nOur meeting will take place on December 27th at 7PM ET. \nCan’t make it live? SUMMARY:The November Book Club - What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
DESCRIPTION:Our October book club pick is WHAT MOVES THE DEAD by T. Kingfisher! \n\n(We couldn’t resist another Kingfisher novel… or\, somehow\, another scary mushroom book??) \n\nPlus this one? It’s a total reimagining of “The Fall of the House of Usher\,” by Edgar Allen Poe\, one of the most famous\, unsettling\, and awesome Gothic short stories of all time. Kingfisher adds\, as Andy Davidson puts it\, “a wholly new mythology” to the tale and we are here for it. \n\n“Thoroughly creepy and utterly enjoyable.” — Publishers Weekly \n\n“T. Kingfisher spins biting wit\, charm and terror into a tale that will make your skin crawl. Poe would be proud!”―Brom \n\n“A fluid technicolor reimagining of Poe’s “House of Usher” that takes no prisoners…Not to be missed.” – Brian Evenson \n\nOur meeting will take place on November 29th at 7PM ET. \n\nCan’t make it live? SUMMARY:The October Book Club - The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black
DESCRIPTION:Our October book club pick is THE COLDEST GIRL IN COLDTOWN by Holly Black! \nThat’s right: we’re FINALLY reading Holly Black! \nOur meeting will take place on October 27th at 7PM ET. \nCan’t make it live? No worries – the replay will be available right after the meeting takes place! \nTo join\, support us on Patreon for $7+ for the month of October\, and you’ll get the invite sent straight to your inbox. \nY’all\, this is one of our favorite vampire books of all time. It’s incredibly creative and one of those books we gobbled up in one night. Here’s what the Kirkus Review (starred!) had to say about it: “Ten years ago\, a vampire “started romanticizing himself” and went on a rampage\, turning people until new vampires were everywhere. As much as possible\, they are contained in walled Coldtowns\, along with humans who idolize them—or were trapped when the walls went up. Outside\, people avoid going out after dark\, watch endless feeds from Coldtown parties and idolize vampire hunters. When nihilistic Tana\, whose emptiness seems to stem from events surrounding her mother’s infection with vampirism\, wakes up in a blood bath to find her ex-boyfriend infected and a terrifying but gorgeous vampire chained beside him\, she is determined to make things right. What follows is a journey that takes her into Coldtown and out of the grief that has plagued her for years\, with plenty of sharply observed characters and situations that feel absurdly\, horribly believable. There’s dry humor and even a relationship (to call it a romance would be too easy; this is something entirely more complex). Perhaps most unexpectedly\, there is no happy ending\, just a thread of hope in humanity.\nYou may be ready to put a stake in vampire lit\, but read this first: It’s dark and dangerous\, bloody and brilliant.”

SUMMARY:The September Book Club - The Faraway Nearby by Rebecca Solnit
DESCRIPTION:We’re trying something completely different for book club this month. Since so many of you have been interested in using fairy tales when writing about your own lives (i.e. using fairy tales in memoir)\, we thought The Faraway Nearby by Rebecca Solnit could be a great launchpad into that discussion. \nThe Faraway Nearby isn’t quite like anything else we’ve ever read. It’s part memoir\, part fairy tale\, part travelogue\, part prose poem\, and part literary criticism. There’s also an incredibly gorgeous essay/ fairy tale that runs along the bottom of each page of the book (which you can read in one fell swoop at the end of the Kindle version.) Solnit uses fairy tales\, Frankenstein\, history\, personal narrative and about a million other things to explore how we are all made of stories – how the stories we tell shape us\, constrain us\, or set us free. \nIn her review of The Faraway Nearby\, Marina Warner (fairy-tale scholar extraordinaire) says: \n“Solnit invokes Scheherazade’s enterprise to tell tales to dispel the rage of the Sultan\, and she explicitly sets out to keep at bay the harm and threats and fears she has experienced. Some of her meanderings are geographical (the jungles of Bolivia\, the endless light of summer in Iceland). Others are personal: psychological struggles in her own life recently\, including bitter love for her mother\, who\, like the wicked queen in Snow White\, was envious of her blond\, clever daughter. But with the oncoming vacancy of Alzheimer’s in her mother’s brain\, their strife begins to lessen; Solnit painfully traces the way the parent-child roles reverse and she becomes a mother to her mother. Then she herself is diagnosed with a dangerous disease. It remains unnamed\, while the treatment is examined up close; the faraway nearby also works as a metaphor for her own body\, when it has become an enemy bent on doing her harm.” \nOur meeting will be on Tuesday\, September 27th at 7PM ET! \nTo join us\, make sure you’re on the Willow tier ($7) or higher for the month of September. SUMMARY:The August Book Club - Moonlight and Vines by Charles de Lint
DESCRIPTION:August Book Club Pick is MOONLIGHT & VINES by Charles de Lint! \n“Newford is the quintessential North American city\, tough and streetwise on the surface and rich with hidden magic for those who can see…” \nWhen we discussed what fantastical realms we’d want to actually visit in our Fairy-Tale Salon\, at least 3 of us said Charles de Lint’s Newford because it feels so livable\, real\, and profoundly magical. Reading his Newford books always makes us feel like we’re slipping on a cozy cardigan and drinking tea…but\, like\, the cardigan was stolen from the fairies and the tea has healing properties. \nMoonlight & Vines is our favorite of de Lint’s short story collections\, and we can’t wait to talk about it with you! His writing blends “Lovecraft’s imagery\, Dunsany’s poetry\, Carroll’s surrealism\, and Alice Hoffman’s small-town strangeness\,” creating “a haunting mixture of human warmth and cold inevitability\, of lessons learned and prices to be paid.” \nOur meeting will be on Monday August 22nd at 7PM ET! \nTo join us\, make sure you support us on Patreon on the Willow tier ($7) or higher for the month of August. DESCRIPTION:Y’all\, we debated pretty much every book we could think of by the late\, great Patricia McKillip\, but in the end we just had to come back to this one for our June book club pick. SUMMARY:The January Book Club - The Seventh Bride by T. Kingfisher
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 18th at 7PM ET to discuss T. Kingfisher’s novel The Seventh Bride! \n\nThe Seventh Bride is a Bluebeard retelling\, but it’s also so much more – it brilliantly plays with all kinds of familiar fairy-tale tropes and centralizes the importance of female friendship and support. \n\nAlso\, it’s wildly creative\, decidedly creepy\, and weirdly heart-warming at times. \n\nIf this isn’t enough to convince you\, T. Kingfisher (the pen name Ursula Vernon uses to distinguish her more adult-themed work from the children’s lit and middle grade she publishes under her legal name) won TWO Hugo awards last week\, which is amazing and super well-deserved! \n\nNPR compares The Seventh Bride favorably to Peter Beagle and Diana Wynne Jones\, writing: \n\n“Stylistically\, Seventh Bride is stripped-down and straightforward\, wasting little space on elaborate scene-setting. That bluntness is appropriate to [the protagonist]’s perspective as an uneducated peasant whose most significant experience of the world involves fighting a bullying swan for her daily lunch. So it’s a surprise that Bride most closely resembles Peter Beagle’s elegant\, poetic novel The Last Unicorn\, with its phantasmagoria of witches\, nobles\, sorcerers\, and great powers. (The two books even share a key image\, in the form of a magical and not entirely physical clock.) Vernon has Beagle’s knack for creating colorful\, instantly memorable characters\, and inhuman creatures capable of inspiring awe and wonder. For that matter\, Vernon sometimes feels like Diana Wynne Jones’ heir\, with her stories of aggrieved heroes trying to bull their way through comic magical chaos.” \n\nWe CAN’T WAIT to talk about this glorious novel with you! SUMMARY:The December Book Club - Where the Wolf by Sally Rosen Kindred
DESCRIPTION:Our Patreon book club is reading the gorgeous poetry book Where the Wolf by Sally Rosen Kindred this month! Our meeting will be on December 15th\, 2021 at 7PM EDT. As a special bonus\, we’ll be joined by the author herself! \n\n“These poems explore how stories—fairy tales\, family memories\, myths\, and dreams—tell us\, and let us tell each other\, who we are\, and what’s wild and sacred in our connections. From “the beast your mother made/ who scans hood and bed\,” to the ghost-guard summoned by a child on the night her family fractures\, to the teenage son who transforms into “beauty\, his dread-body\,” the beings in these poems are themselves stories\, spells: alchemized through language\, always becoming\, bearing hope and loss. They fragment in anxiety\, and form into new wilderness. They open themselves to reconstruction\, redemption.” – Diode Editions \n\nCheck Patreon for the link to join us if you’ve pledged at a $7+ tier!
