In a new translation\, Margaret Yocom first brings us this forgotten tale\, stocked\, as we’d expect\, with kings\, rings\, beasts\, and betrayals. It’s incredibly creative and one of those books we gobbled up in one night. Here’s what the Kirkus Review (starred!) had to say about it: “Ten years ago\, a vampire “started romanticizing himself” and went on a rampage\, turning people until new vampires were everywhere. As much as possible\, they are contained in walled Coldtowns\, along with humans who idolize them—or were trapped when the walls went up. SUMMARY:The September Book Club - The Faraway Nearby by Rebecca Solnit
DESCRIPTION:We’re trying something completely different for book club this month. Since so many of you have been interested in using fairy tales when writing about your own lives (i.e. using fairy tales in memoir)\, we thought The Faraway Nearby by Rebecca Solnit could be a great launchpad into that discussion.  \nThe Faraway Nearby isn’t quite like anything else we’ve ever read. It’s part memoir\, part fairy tale\, part travelogue\, part prose poem\, and part literary criticism. There’s also an incredibly gorgeous essay/ fairy tale that runs along the bottom of each page of the book (which you can read in one fell swoop at the end of the Kindle version.) Solnit uses fairy tales\, Frankenstein\, history\, personal narrative and about a million other things to explore how we are all made of stories – how the stories we tell shape us\, constrain us\, or set us free. \nIn her review of The Faraway Nearby\, Marina Warner (fairy-tale scholar extraordinaire) says:  \n“Solnit invokes Scheherazade’s enterprise to tell tales to dispel the rage of the Sultan\, and she explicitly sets out to keep at bay the harm and threats and fears she has experienced. Some of her meanderings are geographical (the jungles of Bolivia\, the endless light of summer in Iceland). Others are personal: psychological struggles in her own life recently\, including bitter love for her mother\, who\, like the wicked queen in Snow White\, was envious of her blond\, clever daughter. But with the oncoming vacancy of Alzheimer’s in her mother’s brain\, their strife begins to lessen; Solnit painfully traces the way the parent-child roles reverse and she becomes a mother to her mother. Then she herself is diagnosed with a dangerous disease. Kingfisher’s novel The Seventh Bride!  \n\nThe Seventh Bride is a Bluebeard retelling\, but it’s also so much more – it brilliantly plays with all kinds of familiar fairy-tale tropes and centralizes the importance of female friendship and support. \n\nAlso\, it’s wildly creative\, decidedly creepy\, and weirdly heart-warming at times. \n\nIf this isn’t enough to convince you\, T. Kingfisher (the pen name Ursula Vernon uses to distinguish her more adult-themed work from the children’s lit and middle grade she publishes under her legal name) won TWO Hugo awards last week\, which is amazing and super well-deserved! \n\nNPR compares The Seventh Bride favorably to Peter Beagle and Diana Wynne Jones\, writing:  \n\n“Stylistically\, Seventh Bride is stripped-down and straightforward\, wasting little space on elaborate scene-setting. That bluntness is appropriate to [the protagonist]’s perspective as an uneducated peasant whose most significant experience of the world involves fighting a bullying swan for her daily lunch. So it’s a surprise that Bride most closely resembles Peter Beagle’s elegant\, poetic novel The Last Unicorn\, with its phantasmagoria of witches\, nobles\, sorcerers\, and great powers. (The two books even share a key image\, in the form of a magical and not entirely physical clock.) Vernon has Beagle’s knack for creating colorful\, instantly memorable characters\, and inhuman creatures capable of inspiring awe and wonder.
