Our book club pick for October is J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s gorgeous and formative vampire novella, Carmilla! Specifically, we’re going to read Carmen Maria Machado’s edited version of the text, which weaves the story together with imaginary contemporary academia and underscores its queer themes.
“I can’t think of a better guide through this ethereal, infuriating book than Carmen Machado—whose Borgesian imagination unearths for us the possibilities buried in its pages.”
—Jordan Hall, co-creator & writer of Carmilla: The Series
“Simultaneously a delicious vampire tale and a meaningful exercise in remembering silenced voices and questioning the authority of tradition.” – Kirkus Reviews
“[Machado’s] notes and introduction transform the novel from Victorian Gothic into postmodern Gothic” – Katharine Coldiron for Vol. 1 Brooklyn
Our meeting will be on Monday, October 9th at 7PM ET – a bit of a quick turnaround this time, but this is definitely a book you can read in one sitting! If you want to join us, make sure you’re at a $7+ tier on Patreon for the month of October!
Can’t make it live? The replay will be available right after the meeting takes place!
