Fall for the Book Festival – Never Tell Them Your Name: Global Fairylore – We are thrilled to announce that Fairylore: A Compendium of the Fae Folk will be featured at the Fall for the Book’s 28th Annual Fall Festival!

On Wednesday, October 7th at 3PM, we will be giving a presentation called “Never Tell Them Your Name: Global Fairylore” as part of Fall for the Book’s 2026 Fall Festival, located at George Mason University’s Fairfax, VA campus (where we got our MAs!) This event will take place in the Fenwick Library Reading Room (2001). Books will be available for purchase, and we will be signing copies after the presentation.

In tales from around the world, fairies and fae trick, tease, seduce, and terrify. Folklorists Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman explore their many distinct cultural depictions in Fairylore: A Compendium of the Fae Folk. From the leannán sídhe in Ireland to the dvorovoi in Russia, and from from the Brazilian curupira to the moksin tongbŏp of Korea, this richly-illustrated and researched book dives into the folklore behind the different iterations of fae all over the world. Author Mary McMyne says, “With gorgeous illustrations befitting a medieval bestiary and witty prose that reads like a coffee date with your folklorist best friends, this is a fairy encyclopedia like no other. A startling, wondrous compendium of the nebulous beings that haunt the human world.” Cleto and Warman are the co-founders of The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic.

Fall for the Book is Northern Virginia’s oldest and largest festival of literature and the arts, bringing vital literary events to their community for over 25 years. All events are free and open to the public thanks to the generous support of their sponsors. To see the full festival event offerings, visit https://fallforthebook.org/schedule/.

Fairy Tale Salon – Here is the info for our October Fairy-Tale Salon. Thank you so much for your understanding about us having to cancel last month’s salon. To make up for it, this month’s salon will be all about our past quest AND just a general catch up!

Prompt: Folklore Encountered Through Travel (+ Catch Up!)

Original Quest: We’ve done a lot of quests about local folklore, but since we’re going to England at the end of this month, we’re wondering what folklore you’ve encountered while traveling that you really loved or really resonated with you. Did you hear a really great legend at a famous monument? Did the tour director at the British Museum tell the best joke you’ve ever heard? Are the stories your family shares about roadtrips always brought up at Thanksgiving because they’re so amazing? We want to hear it all!

New Quest: WHAT’S UP? It’s been too long, let’s catch up!

If you’d like to participate, make sure that you’re on the Salonnières tier or higher on our Patreon for October!

Book Club – As a bit of a celebration upon the completion of the trip we just lead through Enchanted England, join us to discuss the fabulous Arthurian retelling Morgan is My Name by Sophie Keetch!

Here’s the publisher’s description:

“Young Morgan of Cornwall lives a happy life in Tintagel Castle until King Uther Pendragon, with the help of the sorcerer Merlin, murders her father and tricks her mother into marriage. Furious, brilliant, and vengeful, Morgan defies her brutal stepfather, taking up a secret education, discovering a lifelong affinity with the healing arts, and falling in love with a man far beneath her station. However, defiance comes at a cost. Used as a bargaining chip in her stepfather’s war games, Morgan finds herself banished to a world of isolated castles and gossiping courts, amidst the machinations of kings, sorcerers, and men.

But some desires are not easily forgotten, and the search for her independence is a quest Morgan cannot give up. As the era of King Arthur approaches, she must use all her wit, knowledge, and courage to fight against those who wish to deny her intelligence, crush her spirit, and control her body. But, in seeking her freedom, Morgan risks losing everything–her reputation, her loved ones, and her life.”

And here are a few reviews:

“A breath of fresh air. . . . The sort of reinvention that every woman in Arthurian lore deserves.” —PASTE

“With equal attention to politics and witchcraft, Keetch’s exploration of Morgan’s growth shows how the perspective of men has warped the character over the years. Fans of Arthurian legends retold will not want to miss this.” — Publishers Weekly

“Sophie Keetch’s prose is as mesmerizing as the ocean’s tides, illuminating Morgan’s life with a deft and attentive hand.” —Rebecca Ross, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Divine Rivals and Ruthless Vows

“A very real, passionate retelling of Morgan le Fay’s story, with detail about political and magical lives, and the women who are such a vital part of the tale.” —Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Publications

OUR BOOK, FAIRYLORE, IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER!!!

Here’s the official description from our publisher, Sterling Ethos @ Hachette:

“A gorgeously illustrated guide to the fae, filled with intriguing and well-researched explorations of folklore from around the world.

In Ireland, the sinister leannán sídhe suck the life from artists and poets in exchange for muse-like inspiration. In Japan, the elusive zashiki-warashi bestow prosperity on the human families whose homes they share. From the dvorovoi of Russia to the Brazilian curupira, Malaysia’s orang bunian to English brownies, and the moksin tongbŏp of Korea, the world is full of magical creatures who assist, haunt, and dazzle humankind.

This illustrated compendium written by expert folklorists invites us to enter the realm of the fairy folk. Sections dedicated to fairies of the home, nature, romance, and more emphasize what fairies do and what they mean to people around the world. Each chapter illustrates a different way of seeing fairies—a way they’ve been used to explain our world and ourselves.

This is a fascinating reference for anyone who has ever been enchanted by fairies—or would like to be.”

Kelly Jarvis wrote a wonderful review of our new book, Fairylore, in The Fairy Tale Magazine! “Fairylore: A Compendium of the Fae Folk is a necessary book for all those who seek the rare blend of intellectual contemplation and fairy enchantment that Dr. Sara Cleto and Dr. Brittany Warman provide. It is both a valuable academic resource and a work of art that I will cherish and return to often as I continue to explore the fairy magic that beckons from ‘betwixt and between.’” Check out their review of Fairylore and order our book here!

Lastly, if you’re looking for a SIGNED COPY of the book (with both of our signatures!) and won’t be able to see us in person anytime soon, Virginia Highland Books should still have a few that you can order directly from them! You can purchase from them online here, but be sure to message them first to make sure they still have a signed copy left to send!
