Fairy Tale Salon – Here is the info for our September Fairy-Tale Salon.

Prompt: Folklore Encountered Through Travel

Quest: We’ve done a lot of quests about local folklore, but since we’re going to England at the end of this month, we’re wondering what folklore you’ve encountered while traveling that you really loved or really resonated with you. Did you hear a really great legend at a famous monument? Did the tour director at the British Museum tell the best joke you’ve ever heard? Are the stories your family shares about road trips always brought up at Thanksgiving because they’re so amazing? We want to hear it all!

Book Club – Join us on September 17th at 7PM ET to discuss How To Be Eaten by Maria Adelmann! This book comes from a recommendation by Liz Gotauco and is definitely going to give us a LOT to talk about! That said, just know going in that a lot of the implicit stuff in fairy tales is made pretty horrifically explicit here (with an additional content warning specifically for self-harm.) This one is definitely a little closer to horror than we usually do, but it’s FAIRY TALES so we’re going all in!

Here’s the description: “In present-day New York City, five women meet in a basement support group to process their traumas. Bernice grapples with the fallout of dating a psychopathic, blue-bearded billionaire. Ruby, once devoured by a wolf, now wears him as a coat. Gretel questions her memory of being held captive in a house made of candy. Ashlee, the winner of a Bachelor-esque dating show, wonders if she really got her promised fairy tale ending. And Raina’s love story will shock them all. Summer Reading Challenge – Welcome to the 2026 Carterhaugh School Summer Reading Challenge!

Fall for the Book Festival – Never Tell Them Your Name: Global Fairylore – We are thrilled to announce that Fairylore: A Compendium of the Fae Folk will be featured at the Fall for the Book’s 28th Annual Fall Festival!

On Wednesday, October 7th at 3PM, we will be giving a presentation called “Never Tell Them Your Name: Global Fairylore” as part of Fall for the Book’s 2026 Fall Festival, located at George Mason University’s Fairfax, VA campus (where we got our MAs!) This event will take place in the Fenwick Library Reading Room (2001). Books will be available for purchase, and we will be signing copies after the presentation.

In tales from around the world, fairies and fae trick, tease, seduce, and terrify. Folklorists Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman explore their many distinct cultural depictions in Fairylore: A Compendium of the Fae Folk. From the leannán sídhe in Ireland to the dvorovoi in Russia, and from from the Brazilian curupira to the moksin tongbŏp of Korea, this richly-illustrated and researched book dives into the folklore behind the different iterations of fae all over the world. Author Mary McMyne says, “With gorgeous illustrations befitting a medieval bestiary and witty prose that reads like a coffee date with your folklorist best friends, this is a fairy encyclopedia like no other. A startling, wondrous compendium of the nebulous beings that haunt the human world.” Cleto and Warman are the co-founders of The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic.
