Fairy Tale Salon – Here is all the information for our May Fairy-Tale Salon – YOU ASKED FOR IT!
Prompt: Movie Night: Excalibur!
Quest: We are doing another salon movie night together! Join us on Thursday, May 21st, to watch the iconic 1981 King Arthur film Excalibur! We’re doing this in response to overwhelming demand, so dress in your best medieval-by-way-of-the-80s best and prepare to have a delightful and hilarious time.
Content Warning: Nudity, creepy hungry birds. (Again, this movie is from 1981, and we find it more bizarre and majestic than disturbing, but YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.)
To join us, log on to the Zoom link the same as usual, we’ll all mute and start the film, then we’ll use the chat there to talk throughout the movie.
If you would like to join us, make sure that you’re on the Salonnières tier or higher on our Patreon for May!

Book Club– Please join us on May 28th at 7PM ET to discuss The Elsewhere Express by Samantha Sotto Yambao, a surreal, Studio-Ghibli-esque book about destiny and finding your place in the world.
Here’s the description: “You can’t buy a ticket for The Elsewhere Express. Appearing only to those whose lives are adrift, it’s a magical train seeming to carry very rare and special cargo: a sense of purpose, peace, and belonging. Raya is one of those lost souls. She had dreamed of being a songwriter, but when her brother died, she gave up on her dream and started living his instead. One day on the subway, as her thoughts wander, she’s swept off to the Elsewhere Express. There she meets Q, an intriguing artist who, like her, has lost his place in the world. Together they find a train full of wonders, from a boarding car that’s also a meadow to a dining car where passengers can picnic on lily pads to a bar where jellyfish and whales swim through pink clouds. Over the course of their long, strange night on the train, they also discover that it harbors secrets—and danger: A mysterious stranger has stowed away and brought with him a dark, malignant magic that threatens to destroy the train. But in investigating the stowaway’s identity, Raya also finds herself drawing closer to the ultimate question: “What is her life’s true purpose—and is it a destination the Elsewhere Express can take her to?”
And here are some reviews!
“A stunning, visual fever dream of a story akin to both the game Spiritfarer and Erin Morgenstern’s The Starless Sea—a character-driven tale wrapped in a sparklingly creative spectacle of a world that inhabits a Studio Ghibli–like chaos even as it comes with a well-organized passenger rulebook.”— Booklist (starred review)
“With its poetic, descriptive prose, The Elsewhere Express takes the reader on a magical ride exploring loneliness, life’s purpose, and ultimately human connection through a playful, surreal tale. Without question, the book will delight fantasy enthusiasts as they nestle into this perfect escape, a story that whisks them from the mundane and into an imaginative wonderland they might not want to leave.”—J. Penner, author of A Fellowship of Bakers & Magic
“A delicately layered dream of a book that glimmers with the promise of hope after grief, The Elsewhere Express will carry you to the stars.”—Molly O’Neill, author of Greenteeth

Current Courses Available
Me and the Moon: the Folklore of Tarot ($497) – Me & The Moon is a course that combines tarot history, art, reflection, folk narrative, and intuition as a method to interpret your own story, and yourself, with confidence and insight.
Most importantly, you’ll learn to use the cards as a tool to rediscover your voice, identify your patterns, and embrace your power.
What’s needed: a true sense of curiosity, an itch for creativity, receptiveness to historical and folkloric scholarship, and willingness to flex your intuition and trust your gut.
Whether you’re a seasoned reader or still feeling tentative, you’ll strengthen your connection to the cards through clear-eyed cultural analysis, learn new strategies that rely on intuitive folk narrative, and gain confidence and flexibility in your ability to read the stories within the tarot.
What’s Included:
- Four core LIVE video lectures about the week’s key concepts. Expect college-level discussions, complex topics in accessible language, hands-on practice, time for Q&As, and a sense of humor.
- The History & Folklore of Tarot: Tarot has a long, often wildly misunderstood history, full of twists, turns, and exposure to cultures and characters that radically changed what the cards stood for. We start the course by walking through the many incarnations of tarot so that you can experience how it has changed and understand what that means for you and your own take on the cards. Live on 5/19 at 7PM ET!
- Tarot Symbols: Tarot is (in)famous for its dense, evocative symbolism, and endless ink has been spilled over their meaning and how to unlock them. In this module, we share our three-layered approach to understanding tarot symbolism so that you can read with flexibility and your own intuition at the helm. Live on 5/26 at 7PM ET!
- Divination & Personal Reflection: It’s time to get hands on! We show you how to harness the power of fairy tales to jumpstart the process of telling your own story through tarot, knock down some of the biggest misconceptions and limiting superstitions about how readings work, and flex our storytelling muscles together in real time. Live on 6/2 at 7PM ET!
- Tarot & Literature: Tarot’s inspiration goes far beyond readings – due to its versatility and symbolic richness, it’s often a catalyst for major creative ventures. Together, we explore texts and art rooted in the tarot and plant seeds for your own future projects that can grow from your tarot practice and reflection. Live on 6/9 at 7PM ET!
- Access to an exclusive Circle community for students of Me and the Moon. This moderated space will include weekly discussion questions and a dedicated section for sharing daily draws and reflections.
- A custom PDF workbook featuring weekly discussion questions for learning and self-discovery to help guide your reflections, ground you in history and folklore, and flex your intuition; guided card spreads; further reading; and more.
- A day-by-day PDF journal to record a simple daily card draw with prompts for reflection on everything you’re learning in the course. This is where you’ll grow confidence with practice (and step into some of that Queen of Wands energy!)
- Recommended weekly readings. You do not have to read these texts to participate, but they will enhance your understanding and experience. Please purchase or borrow:
- A booklet exploring the cards from a tarot deck of your choice (we recommend Rider–Waite, Cats Rule the Earth, or the Phantomwise decks if you don’t know where to start)
- The Castle of Crossed Destinies by Italo Calvino
- Conversations with the Tarot by Maria DeBlassie
- The Hanged Man by Francesca Lia Block
- Bonus Workshop: “The Cards That Choose Us: Tarot and Personal Story Making” with Dr. Maria DeBlassie

OUR BOOK, FAIRYLORE, IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER!!!
Here’s the official description from our publisher, Sterling Ethos @ Hachette:
“A gorgeously illustrated guide to the fae, filled with intriguing and well-researched explorations of folklore from around the world.
In Ireland, the sinister leannán sídhe suck the life from artists and poets in exchange for muse-like inspiration. In Japan, the elusive zashiki-warashi bestow prosperity on the human families whose homes they share. From the dvorovoi of Russia to the Brazilian curupira, Malaysia’s orang bunian to English brownies, and the moksin tongbŏp of Korea, the world is full of magical creatures who assist, haunt, and dazzle humankind.
This illustrated compendium written by expert folklorists invites us to enter the realm of the fairy folk. Sections dedicated to fairies of the home, nature, romance, and more emphasize what fairies do and what they mean to people around the world. Each chapter illustrates a different way of seeing fairies—a way they’ve been used to explain our world and ourselves.
This is a fascinating reference for anyone who has ever been enchanted by fairies—or would like to be.”
Kelly Jarvis wrote a wonderful review of our new book, Fairylore, in The Fairy Tale Magazine! “Fairylore: A Compendium of the Fae Folk is a necessary book for all those who seek the rare blend of intellectual contemplation and fairy enchantment that Dr. Sara Cleto and Dr. Brittany Warman provide. It is both a valuable academic resource and a work of art that I will cherish and return to often as I continue to explore the fairy magic that beckons from ‘betwixt and between.’” Check out their review of Fairylore and order our book here!
Lastly, if you’re looking for a SIGNED COPY of the book (with both of our signatures!) and won’t be able to see us in person anytime soon, Virginia Highland Books should still have a few that you can order directly from them! You can purchase from them online here, but be sure to message them first to make sure they still have a signed copy left to send!
