Fairy Tale Salon – Sometimes you’re so inspired and excited about a project that things just seem to effortlessly fall into place… and other times, you get stuck. We’re talking deep in the mud, uninspired, and moments-away-from-giving-up-completely stuck. Where do you feel stuck in your life? What do you do when the despair of ‘stuck’ threatens? How do you tend to struggle, how do you recognize it, and what do you do to get out of the gunk? This salon is all about helping you go “THROUGH the tunnel, to the other side!” (#ifyouknowyouknow) Let’s talk it through together – after all, when it comes to this kind of thing, many heads really can be better than one!

If you’d like to participate, just make sure that you’re on the Salonnières tier or higher for September!

Book ClubIt’s time for another graphic novel, y’all, and we’re so excited about this silly, adorable, and moving one – Nimona by ND Stevenson (yes, the comic that inspired the recent Netflix film, and yes, the creator of the recent She-Ra reboot!) Join us on September 25 at 7PM ET to talk about this absolutely delightful book that won tons of awards and even more hearts.

Here’s the description:

“Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.”

And here are some reviews:

“If you’re going to read one graphic novel this year, make it this one.” – Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Nimona, with all her flaws, breaks away completely from what women are allowed to be in popular fiction.”Vanity Fair

“From its first panel, Nimona draws you into a narrative combining shark jokes, a shadowy institution and a startling amount of heart. So whether you’re young or old, a comics newbie or a seasoned veteran, make the decision to explore the fantastical world Stevenson has created. You won’t regret it.”Paste Magazine

Smithsonian Associates: Witches in the Grimms’ Fairy Tales

Once upon a time, there was a witch. She was beautiful and powerful. She was frightening and dangerous. She was everything people feared and everything many of them wanted to be.

On September 30 at 6:45PM ET, folklorists Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman discuss the versatile figure of the witch in the folkloric medium of the fairy tale. Using the collection of the Brothers Grimm, Cleto and Warman explore the many distinctive witches they gave us and their relationships to self-determination, community, and nature. Then Cleto and Warman focus on the witches who appear in five fairy tales: “Rapunzel,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “The Three Spinners,” “Frau Trude,” and “All Kinds of Fur.” By illuminating different aspects of the figure of the witch as she appears in the Grimms’ tales, they demonstrate the complexity and power that characterize her, even within a single collection of stories.

These witches represent the many ways of being a woman in the world and are a rich repository of education, inspiration, and enchantment, Cleto and Warman say.
